Winter Concerts!

12/11/2012

Our theater is being renovated, and though it will be beautiful, it's been stressful trying to figure out which events can be held in there and which will have to be moved. Our Area Choral Showcase, which has doubled in size from last year to include nine ensembles -- two from Wangenheim, Marshall, CPMA, and Mira Mesa, and one from Scripps Ranch -- is being held tonight at Wangenheim Middle School. They were kind enough to host nearly the 280 students who will be getting together to sing for each other tonight.

Our major concert, the annual Winter Choral Concert for Mira Mesa, will be held on our campus next week - December 18. Tickets are on sale on the home page for only $7, and you can join the Facebook event here. There will be holiday and non-holiday tunes, English and foreign language songs, Renaissance, gospel, musical theatre, vocal jazz, soloists, and much, much more! Join us for a fun way to kick off the winter season!

Welcome back to school, and happy 2012! The Madrigals have several upcoming events to be aware of, so make sure these events are on your calendars! First, the Sing-a-Thon: Saturday, January 21, 10am-5pm, a combination of a much-needed Saturday rehearsal with a sponsorship drive. We'll be working on a minimum of six pieces, plus technique, sight-singing, and much more. Second, our Scripps Health Performance, Monday, January 23, 11am-2pm, where we have been booked to sing three pieces at their Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship ceremony. This is the Monday of the week of finals, so use your best judgment when asking your teachers if you can attend. You will not be penalized for missing this event for academics. Next, our Area Choral Showcase will be Monday, February 13 at 7pm. The top choirs from Wangenheim Middle School, Marshall Middle School, and CPMA Middle School will be joining us in our campus theater for a fun, festive recruitment event with plenty of singing and performing. Free admission! Lastly, our Spring Festival with trip to Disney parks is Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. See letter for more details.

Keep an eye on our upcoming events, as our calendar looks very busy during the upcoming holiday season. Currently we have performances scheduled for the Mira Mesa Senior Center (11/15), the Mira Mesa Town Council (12/5), the Farmers' Market (12/13), and the school campus (12/16) in addition to our standard Winter Concert (12/15). We also have two restaurant fundraisers: Carl's Jr. on 12/6 (go to the MMHS orchestra concert afterward!) and Panda Express on 12/15 (definitely come to our own concert afterward!). The 4th period "Door Decorating" contest begins 12/12, and we hope to have at least one more in-class clinic before our concert. And finally, don't forget musical auditions for "Phantom of the Opera" begin on 11/14! Keep up the good work! "I'm... dreaming of a White Christmas..."

Glee Gives a Note, Madrigals Need You!

Budget cuts have continually put the arts at risk in public schools. The hit TV show, Glee, has decided to take a stand and fight for music programs in public schooling systems and have since teamed up with the Give a Note Foundation. In their Glee Gives a Note contest, music programs across the nation have the opportunity to win up to $50,000 by submitting a two-minute video. 73 schools will receive a prize and the MMHS Madrigals decided that they deserve to be one of those prize winners!

By voting for the Madrigals' video submission, you can help advance the ensemble into the next round of the contest and get the choir one step closer to the prize money. It only takes two clicks to cast your vote and you can do so everyday, one vote per IP address. Be sure to vote daily to ensure the Madrigals' success!
